Airfield Operations Specialist
Job Description
An Airfield Operations Specialist ensures that the "airside" of the airport—including runways, taxiways, and aprons—is safe, functional, and compliant with all national and international aviation regulations. They are the eyes and ears of the airfield, conducting constant patrols to identify hazards like pavement cracks, lighting failures, or debris. This role is essential for maintaining the structural and operational integrity of the airfield while coordinating closely with Air Traffic Control and maintenance teams to ensure zero disruptions to flight schedules.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Safety Inspections: Conducting frequent, detailed inspections of runways and taxiways for Foreign Object Debris (FOD), drainage issues, and structural wear.
  • Wildlife Hazard Management: Utilizing specialized tools and techniques to mitigate bird strikes and manage other wildlife activity that could threaten aircraft safety.
  • Lighting & Navigational Aid Monitoring: Ensuring airfield lighting, signage, and visual docking systems are fully operational and visible in all weather conditions.
  • NOTAM Coordination: Drafting and issuing "Notices to Air Missions" to inform pilots of airfield closures, construction, or temporary hazards.
  • Emergency & Snow Operations: Leading the ground response during winter weather (de-icing/plowing) and acting as a lead coordinator during on-field aircraft emergencies.

Salary Explanation
Salaries for Airfield Operations Specialists reflect the technical nature of airfield safety and the requirement for high-level situational awareness.
  • Average Salary: Full-time specialists typically earn between $45,000 and $75,000 annually.
  • High-Traffic Hubs: Those working at major international airports or in regions with extreme weather (requiring complex snow ops) can earn $80,000 to $95,000+.
  • Management Tracks: Senior Specialists or Operations Directors overseeing large airside teams can command salaries exceeding $110,000.
  • Benefits: Most roles include government or corporate pension plans, comprehensive health benefits, and specialized certifications in airfield management.

  8. How do you prioritize airfield repairs when you have limited staff and multiple high-priority issues?
  9. Describe a time you had to lead or assist in an emergency response on the airfield—what was your specific role?
  10. How do you stay current on changing international standards for airfield signage and lighting markings?
