The Aviary Keeper in Hospitality

Job Description
An Aviary Keeper in Hospitality is responsible for the daily care, health, and presentation of birds within a hotel, resort, or botanical garden setting. This role blends expert husbandry with high-level guest interaction, as the aviaries are often central decorative features or interactive attractions. The keeper ensures the birds thrive in a public environment while maintaining the pristine visual standards expected in a luxury setting.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Husbandry & Nutrition: Preparing species-specific diets, managing clean water sources, and performing daily deep-cleaning of habitats to maintain "resort-ready" aesthetics.
  • Health Monitoring: Observing birds for signs of illness or injury and coordinating with veterinarians for routine check-ups or emergency care.
  • Guest Engagement: Answering guest questions about the birds, leading "bird-of-prey" demonstrations, or managing controlled feeding experiences.
  • Habitat Maintenance: Managing tropical plants, misters, and perching within the aviary to replicate natural environments while keeping walkways safe for guests.
  • Record Keeping: Maintaining detailed logs on breeding habits, appetite, and behavioral changes for every bird in the collection.

Salary Explanation
The salary for an Aviary Keeper in hospitality reflects the specialized knowledge required to care for avian species, ranging from exotic parrots to ornamental waterfowl.
  • Average Salary: Most keepers in these settings earn between $38,000 and $52,000 annually, depending on the complexity of the bird collection.
  • Hourly Rates: Entry-level positions at resort aviaries typically start between $18 and $22 per hour.
  • Senior/Lead Keeper: Those responsible for rare species or managing a larger team of keepers can earn between $55,000 and $68,000.
  • Total Compensation: In remote luxury resorts or safari lodges, the package often includes housing, meals, and specialized uniforms, which adds significant value to the base pay.
