Baggage Handler / Ramp Agent
Job Description
Baggage Handler / Ramp Agent is the physical and logistical engine of the airport’s ground operations. This role is responsible for the rapid, safe, and organized movement of passenger luggage and air cargo between the terminal and the aircraft. Working in a high-intensity outdoor environment, they ensure that every piece of baggage is correctly routed, securely loaded according to weight-and-balance specifications, and delivered to the arrivals carousel with speed and care.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Loading & Unloading: Manually or mechanically moving luggage and freight into aircraft cargo holds, ensuring items are secured to prevent shifting during flight.
  • Marshaling & Ground Support: Assisting with aircraft "pushbacks" and guiding planes into gates using signaling wands or specialized towing vehicles.
  • Equipment Operation: Safely operating heavy machinery, including belt loaders, tugs, baggage carts, and de-icing units.
  • Safety Compliance: Adhering to strict ramp safety protocols to prevent accidents, injuries, and Foreign Object Debris (FOD) on the tarmac.
  • Logistics Sorting: Utilizing scanning technology to verify that every bag matches the correct flight manifest, preventing lost or misrouted luggage.

Salary Explanation

  • Average Salary: Full-time agents typically earn between $38,000 and $52,000 annually.
  • Hourly Rates: Entry-level positions usually start between $18 and $24 per hour, depending on the airport's location and the airline's tier.
  • Seniority & Lead Roles: Crew leads or supervisors who manage the entire ramp team for a specific gate can earn $55,000 to $68,000.
