An Aquarium Guide in a resort or hotel setting is responsible for leading educational and engaging tours of on-site marine life facilities. This role blends marine biology knowledge with high-level hospitality, as guides must translate scientific information into entertaining stories that enhance the stay of resort guests.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Guided Tours: Leading individuals or groups through aquarium exhibits, providing detailed information on various species and ecosystems.
  • Interactive Experiences: Managing "touch tank" sessions or feeding demonstrations while ensuring the safety of both the guests and the marine life.
  • Guest Engagement: Proactively approaching guests to answer questions and provide "random acts of hospitality" through interesting facts.
  • Exhibit Monitoring: Keeping a constant eye on the health of the animals and the clarity of the displays, reporting any technical or biological issues to the life support team.
  • Conservation Advocacy: Promoting the resort’s environmental initiatives and teaching guests how they can help protect ocean health.
 

 
Salary Expectations
Earnings depend on the guide's level of expertise and the scale of the resort's aquatic features.
  • Average Range: Typically between £21,000 and £28,000 per year for full-time positions.
  • Specialist/Lead Guides: Those with degrees in marine biology or significant experience at major resorts can earn between £30,000 and £35,000.
  • Hourly Rates: Part-time or seasonal guides usually earn between £11.50 and £13.50 per hour.
