Job Overview
An Interpretive Naturalist in a resort or hotel setting serves as the bridge between guests and the local environment. This role is common in eco-resorts, coastal properties, or mountain retreats where the natural surroundings are a core part of the guest experience. They design and lead programs that explain the local flora, fauna, and ecology, turning a simple walk into an educational journey.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Guided Experiences: Leading nature walks, birdwatching tours, or stargazing sessions for guests of all ages.
  • Program Development: Designing seasonal activities such as seasonal wildlife spotting, botanical tours, or beachcombing workshops.
  • Environmental Stewardship: Assisting the resort in sustainability initiatives and monitoring the local ecosystem for changes or health issues.
  • Guest Education: Creating informative displays, brochures, or digital content about the local wildlife and conservation efforts.
  • Safety Management: Ensuring guests stay on marked trails and follow safety protocols to prevent negative impacts on the environment or local wildlife.
 

 
Salary Expectations
Pay is often influenced by the naturalist's specific expertise (e.g., marine biology or ornithology) and the resort's location.
  • Average Range: Typically between £23,000 and £30,000 per year.
  • Senior/Specialist Roles: Those at high-end safari-style lodges or remote luxury eco-resorts can earn between £35,000 and £42,000.
  • Hourly Rates: Seasonal or part-time naturalists usually earn between £12.00 and £15.00 per hour.
