Ski Instructor Adult Holiday

Job Overview
As a Seasonal Ski Instructor for the adult holiday market, you are responsible for more than just technical coaching. You act as a guide, social facilitator, and safety expert for adults visiting during peak festive periods. The focus is on providing a high-end, low-stress experience for holiday travelers ranging from "never-evers" to advanced skiers. You will manage group dynamics, ensure guest safety in crowded holiday conditions, and often provide "concierge-style" advice on mountain dining and local apres-ski culture.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Instruction: Deliver clear, engaging lessons tailored to adult learning styles, focusing on skill progression and confidence building.
  • Guest Experience: Act as a holiday ambassador, ensuring guests navigate the resort efficiently during the busiest weeks of the year.
  • Safety Management: Maintain strict uphill and downhill safety protocols, especially in high-traffic holiday zones.
  • Social Facilitation: Create a fun, inclusive group atmosphere for solo adult travelers or social groups.

Salary Expectations
The compensation for Ski Instructors varies based on certification level (PSIA-AASI) and the resort's prestige.
  • Base Range: $15.00 – $25.00 per hour.
  • Certified/Experienced: $28.00 – $45.00+ per hour for Level 2 or 3 instructors.
  • Private Lesson Premiums: Instructors often receive a higher "request rate" for private holiday bookings.
  • Gratuities: For adult holiday lessons, tips are a significant portion of income, often ranging from $20 to $100+ per day depending on the group size and service level.

10 Sample Interview Questions
  1. Teaching Philosophy: How do you adapt your teaching style for an adult beginner versus a child beginner?
  2. Holiday Crowds: How do you ensure the safety and cohesion of a group when the slopes are at maximum capacity during a holiday weekend?
  3. Guest Service: An adult student is frustrated and fearful after a fall. How do you manage their emotions and get them back on their skis?
  4. Resort Knowledge: Beyond skiing, how do you add value to a guest's holiday (e.g., recommendations for dining or events)?
  5. Adaptability: How would you handle a group with vastly different ability levels if the ski school is too full to split them up?
  6. Reliability: Holiday shifts are mandatory and often involve cold or adverse weather. Describe your experience working in challenging outdoor conditions.
  7. Communication: How do you explain a complex technical movement (like weight transfer) to someone who has no athletic background?
  8. Physical Stamina: Are you prepared to spend 6–7 hours on the snow in high altitudes for several consecutive days?
  9. Conflict Resolution: How do you handle a guest who insists they are an "Intermediate" skier but clearly lacks the skills for the terrain the group is entering?
  10. Salesmanship: How do you encourage a holiday guest to book a follow-up lesson or a private session without sounding like a "salesperson"?
