Aircraft Refueller
Job Description
An Aircraft Refueller is a specialized ground operations professional responsible for the safe and precise delivery of aviation fuel to aircraft. This role requires a "zero-mistake" approach to safety, as the refueller must manage high-pressure equipment and hazardous materials in a busy tarmac environment. They ensure that every aircraft receives the exact type and quantity of fuel required for its flight plan while maintaining strict quality control to prevent contamination.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Fuel Delivery: Operating heavy-duty fueling tankers and hydrant dispensers to pump thousands of gallons of Jet A-1 or Avgas into aircraft tanks.
  • Quality Control: Performing "sump tests" and visual inspections to check for water, sediment, or microbial growth in the fuel before it enters the aircraft.
  • Safety Coordination: Establishing proper grounding and bonding to prevent static discharge and managing the "safety zone" around the aircraft during the fueling process.
  • Logistical Accuracy: Verifying fuel orders against flight manifests and accurately documenting total poundage/gallonage for the flight deck.
  • Emergency Prevention: Monitoring equipment for leaks or malfunctions and standing ready with fire suppression protocols in the event of a spill.

Salary Explanation
Salaries for Aircraft Refuellers reflect the physical nature of the work and the high level of risk management involved in handling flammable liquids.
  • Average Salary: Full-time refuellers typically earn between $35,000 and $52,000 annually.
  • Hourly Rates: Entry-level positions often start at $18 to $25 per hour, depending on the airport's volume and the employer (airline vs. third-party fuel provider).
  • Overtime & Premiums: Due to 24/7 airport operations, many refuellers significantly increase their earnings through night-shift differentials and holiday overtime.
  • Training Value: Most employers provide specialized HAZMAT and airfield driving certifications, which are high-value additions to a professional's resume.
