Areni is a historic, wine-centric village in Armenia's Vayots Dzor province, renowned as the site of the world's oldest known winery (c. 4100 BC) and the oldest leather shoe (c. 3500 BC) found in the nearby "Birds' Cave". Situated in the Arpa Valley, it is a hub for viticulture, featuring local grape varieties and an annual wine festival in October.
