In Armenia, hospitality is more than a cultural trait—it is a sacred duty. This tradition, rooted in the ancient Silk Road history, is encapsulated by the belief that "a guest is a gift from God".

The Ritual of the Table

The hearth of Armenian hospitality is the dinner table. Whether you are a lifelong friend or a stranger met on a village path, you will likely be greeted with an invitation to "break bread."

The Three-Offer Rule It is customary for guests to politely refuse an invitation twice; acceptance usually happens on the third offer.

The Feast Expect a table laden with lavash (flatbread), dolma (stuffed grape leaves), and khorovats (barbecue).

The Toastmaster (Tamada) Meals are structured by poetic toasts. The first is typically "to a good meeting," and the final one is traditionally reserved for parents.

Affectionate Language You will frequently hear the word "Jan" added to names. It translates roughly to "dear" or "soul" and signifies deep warmth and respect.
