Emergency Response Team
Job Description
An airport Emergency Response Team (ERT), primarily composed of Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) personnel, serves as the first line of defense against aviation-related disasters. These specialized responders are trained to manage high-intensity incidents, including aircraft fires, large-scale fuel spills, and medical emergencies within the terminal or on the runway. Unlike municipal firefighters, they must possess expert knowledge of aircraft structural layouts, hazardous materials (HAZMAT) specific to aviation, and rapid evacuation techniques for diverse passenger groups.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Rapid Intervention: Responding to aircraft alerts or accidents within strict timeframes to extinguish fires and perform rescues.
  • Medical First Response: Providing advanced first aid and stabilization to passengers and staff during health crises or mass casualty incidents.
  • Hazardous Material Management: Containing and neutralizing fuel leaks or chemical spills on the airfield to prevent environmental damage or explosions.
  • Safety Inspections: Conducting routine checks of emergency equipment and collaborating with operations to identify potential fire risks in terminals.
  • Emergency Planning: Participating in large-scale disaster simulations and drills to ensure total synchronization with local hospitals and police.

Salary Explanation
Salaries for airport emergency responders reflect their specialized training and the high-risk nature of their environment.
  • Average Salary: In the United States, the average annual pay for an Airport Firefighter is approximately $59,606, with most earners ranging between $45,500 and $69,000.
