Animal Care Specialist (Hospitality)

Job Overview
An Animal Care Specialist in a hotel or resort setting manages on-site animal programs, such as stables, petting zoos, wildlife sanctuaries, or guest pet services. Unlike traditional veterinary or farm roles, this position focuses on the intersection of professional animal husbandry and the high-end guest experience typical of luxury hospitality.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Daily Care: Managing the feeding, grooming, and health monitoring of resort animals to ensure they are in peak condition for guest interactions.
  • Habitat Maintenance: Overseeing the cleanliness and safety of enclosures, stables, or aquariums to meet both welfare standards and aesthetic resort expectations.
  • Guest Education: Leading interactive sessions, guided tours, or educational talks to enhance the guest experience and promote conservation.
  • Safety Compliance: Implementing strict protocols to manage interactions between guests and animals, ensuring the safety of both parties at all times.
  • Program Development: Designing new animal-based activities or services, such as "doggy day-care" for guests’ pets or therapeutic equestrian programs.

Salary Expectations
Pay rates are influenced by the specialist nature of the animals being cared for and the prestige of the resort.
  • Average Range: Typically between £22,000 and £32,000 per year for standard animal care roles.
  • Specialist/Senior Roles: Head keepers or managers of exotic wildlife programs at destination resorts can earn £38,000 to £45,000.
  • Hourly Rates: Junior specialists or seasonal staff often earn between £11.50 and £14.50 per hour.
  • Additional Perks: Roles at remote or luxury resorts frequently include subsidized meals, uniforms, and occasionally staff housing.
